Barbara Njovo

2023 Global Athlete Congress Participant

Barbara Njovo is an athlete from Special Olympics Zimbabwe in the Africa Region and has been involved with Special Olympics since 2017. Barbara participates in athletics, competing in the 100- and 200-meter events.

Her favorite part about Special Olympics is learning a lot of skills and knowing that she can do anything she sets her mind to do. She has also made a lot of friends through Special Olympics.

Barbara is excited for the congress in Berlin. She is looking forward to meeting new friends, seeing new places as well as learning from all the people she will meet.

Barbara is employed as an office assistant at the Special Olympics National office in Zambia. When Barbara isn’t working or competing, she enjoys watching TV, making pottery, playing, and looking after animals (dogs and chickens), and playing volleyball. Outside of Special Olympics, Barbara raises chickens.

Barbara says that being an athlete leader means advocating for her fellow athletes in areas that they are not happy with and advocating for inclusion.

Project Description

Barbara’s project focuses on raising awareness of menstrual hygiene and sanitation. Through her project, Barbara has been able to educate others about how to make non-disposable sanitary pads and reusable pads. This project has imparted important skills to the Athlete Leaders, training them to make pads and educating them how to use and wash these pads. Additionally, the Athletes who have created these pads have been able to generate an income and develop the knowledge to educate other Athletes across their communities, cities and across the Africa region.
